The significant penetration of the Mueca Festival in the north of Tenerife is also measured in the impact that the International Street Art Festival has on the hotel sector in the area. For the present 2016, a year that is already being particularly favorable for tourism in the islands, the first forecasts point to an almost full house in the hotels of Puerto de la Cruz and neighboring municipalities during its days of celebration, from 12 to 15 next May.
Mueca is theatre, music, dance, storytelling, circus and it is also an important tool for social and economic revitalization. The Festival is an international benchmark for culture of the highest quality. It is the best and most followed street art festival in the Canary Islands and one of the main cultural events in the Archipelago, and this strength also translates into a significant impact on the increase in overnight stays in hotels in the north of Tenerife. Sandra Rodríguez, Councilor for Culture and Finance of Puerto de la Cruz, points out that “these data confirm the relationship between the value of the arts and economic development. Our commitment to culture is solid and these results help reaffirm our intentions”.
Studies carried out in previous editions certify a notable increase in hotel occupancy during the month of May, an annual period that, as a rule, is not usually particularly attractive for tourism. The organization of the Festival decided years ago to adjust its date of celebration, in order to favor the entrepreneurs of the municipality's hospitality industry. Thus, in the last two, the percentage of occupancy in hotels in Puerto de la Cruz increased by up to 16 points, reaching a figure of 65% occupancy in 2015.
The weekend of celebration of Mueca shows a much higher occupancy percentage than that recorded during the rest of the month of May. In this way, with data from the same sector, the positive impact that culture has on the tourism sector is ratified, as a decisive commitment, in addition, to implant a valueadded to the usual attractions of the north of Tenerife. In 2016, forecasts suggest that the hotel sector in both Puerto de la Cruz and neighboring towns will star in record figures, close to full.
Mueca, in addition, develops a work of direct interaction with some hotels in Puerto de la Cruz, in such a way that accommodation spaces such as the Marte, San Telmo, Maga, El Tope and Orotava Palace hotels will host various scenic and artistic actions as part of the programming.
In 2016, Mueca has taken an important step forward with a firm commitment to internationalization. In collaboration with Turismo de Tenerife, the International Street Art Festival has been promoting itself for weeks through the different communication channels of the public company. Outside the Canarian borders, Mueca is present in its representative offices abroad (Madrid, Germany, Great Britain, France, Russia), the Spanish Tourism Offices – OETs, in the conventional and specialized press, as well as on the website Tenerife Tourism website and social networks. Also new in this 2016 edition, the website www.festivalmueca.com offers all the programming and information in English. After the first 15 days since it was activated, and after a global of more than 6,000 users, a large number of visits have been registered from our main issuing markets, but also from countries as rare as the United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany , Holland, Pakistan, England, Finland, Lithuania, etc.
