Puerto de la Cruz will open its doors to thousands of attendees for the celebration of the sixteenth edition of the 'Mueca' International Street Art Festival, which in 2018 will take place from the 10th to the 13th of this month of May. This international sample returns with the programming of more than 60 companies, with a poster of artists that this year will have a notable presence in the so-called theme streets, in addition to the great shows that are programmed on the main stages.

The Festival was presented this morning to the media at the Puerto de la Cruz City Hall facilities, with the presence of Lope Afonso and Sandra Rodríguez, Mayor and Councilor for Culture of Puerto de la Cruz, respectively; Carlos Alonso, president of the Cabildo de Tenerife; Aurelio González, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands; Mario Vega, director of the production company One hour less; Fernando Senante (managing manager of the Urban Development _Consortium_ for the Rehabilitation of Puerto de la Cruz); Francis Mueca, member of the Cómplices Mueca platform; and Mariano León (Fundación CajaCanarias) and Lourdes Pérez (Director of the CaixaBank business area in the Northeast of Tenerife), as representatives of the private companies that support the festival.

In his speech, Lope Afonso pointed out that "it is no longer that Mueca is in the First Division of the arts in the Canary Islands, but I think it can be said that it is in the national and international Champions League of Culture". For her part, Sandra Rodríguez stated that the success of Mueca “forces us to reinvent ourselves every year in order to welcome an audience that is becoming more and more numerous, when sometimes we think that we can no longer grow. Puerto de la Cruz is distinguished by its cultural heritage and Mueca is proof of this”.

Cabildo de Tenerife and the Government of the Canary Islands are two institutions that have always supported Mueca. In his speech to the media, Carlos Alonso pointed out that “this exhibition represents, like no other activity in Puerto de la Cruz, that paradigm shift that the city is experiencing, which not only translates into works, but also in its redefinition as a place of coexistence, which exudes well-being and attractiveness for the visitor». Alonso added that Mueca is perhaps the best example of how this change is taking place in the city and commented that "the Cabildo's support has been constant for this festival and in fact Mueca has positioned itself as one of the cultural events that identify the Island and that it will have a particular promotion strategy from the Island

For his part, Aurelio González insisted that the Government's support for this festival is due to the fact that “Mueca is within the line of our objectives. We have to ensure that the citizen increasingly demands more culture”,

As part of the organization, Mario Vega pointed out that "the evolution in the growth of the Festival and the increasing and more defined criteria of the attending public represent a great challenge for the organization."

61 COMPANIES, ALMOST 400 ARTISTS

A total of 61 companies will be the protagonists of this return of Mueca to the streets of Puerto de la Cruz. In total, there will be almost 400 artists who will star in the largest performing arts show in the Canary Islands during its four days. Six international, seven national and 48 regional companies will make up the poster for this important cultural event in Puerto de la Cruz. The bulk of the planned programming can already be consulted on the web www.festivalmueca.com.

Mueca will have four main stages: El Peñón, Plaza Europa, Espacio Muelle and Espacio Nicko; in which you can see shows such as the one by the acclaimed Abubukaka or the international companies Le Collectif de la BasseCour, CirzoZoé or GandiniJuggling. In addition, the festival will have a powerful program in the thematic streets: Del Ingenio, De la Lengua, Del Movimiento, De la Música and Creativa. Here they will enjoy the numbers starring PixieDixie, Paula Quintana, 7 island swing & Mama Manouche, Phil Otajole, Reciclown and Fran Baraja, among many others.

In addition, the program continues at night at the MásMueca venues with theater, concerts, salsa workshops and a vinyl fair. These activities will take place over the weekend in Porto venues, thus expanding the nightlife on offer during the Festival. For their part, the Cómplices shops collaborate with Mueca with attractive offers during the Festival.

The invitations for the shows that require it will be available starting tomorrow, Tuesday, May 8, at the Festival's official information point (in front of the Customs House, on Las Lonjas street), which in the days before The festival will be open every day from 10-13h. and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. During the four days of Mueca, it will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Sunday, the closing day, until 2 p.m.

The Festiva Mueca will once again turn the central streets of Puerto de la Cruz into the epicenter of Culture in the Canary Islands for four days, with a defined and established commitment for lovers of theater and street arts in all its aspects.

Mueca, in addition to reaffirming itself each year as one of the main cultural exhibitions in the Canary Islands, also aspires to be an optimal model in matters of sustainability, working decisively on proper waste management, as well as key aspects for the operation of the exhibition , as is the case with the provision of special parking areas, both for cars and bicycles.
