The nineteenth edition will begin on Thursday, November 25 with Abubukaka. The quartet will open the festival in the Peñón space with the premiere of the show 'Elamiento de Patarrás'. Since then, Puerto de la Cruz will become the epicenter of culture in the Canary Islands, focusing on disciplines such as circus, theater, dance, music or physical theater.

The Porto festival was presented to the media this Monday, November 22. In the informative appearance were the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Marco González; the Deputy Minister of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Juan Márquez; and the Vice President and Minister of Culture of the Island Council of Tenerife, Enrique Arriaga. In addition, the press conference was marked by the presence of various members of the Cómplices Mueca platform (organizers of the event) and the Abubukaka and Burka theater quartet, a company represented by Aranza Coello.

The highest representative of Puerto de la Cruz assured that this nineteenth edition is an edition “adapted and reinvented, but that it starts with all the illusion. It has been complex to adapt a street art festival in the midst of a pandemic,” he acknowledged. On the other hand, González explained that this event is one of the signs that Puerto de la Cruz has had the capacity to reinvent itself and "to responsibly assume this opportunity that only creativity has."

The Deputy Minister of Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Juan Márquez, congratulated the tourist city because "Puerto de la Cruz is one of the municipalities where we invest the most because it is where a more powerful cultural policy is being developed." Enrique Arriaga, Vice President and Minister of Culture of the Island Council of Tenerife, endorsed Márquez's statements saying that "he is an example and I know that the work behind the organization of this festival has not been easy," added Arriaga.

Hortensia Hernández, representative of the Cómplices Mueca platform, recalled that "about ten years ago we started meeting to carry out this event. We did not think that this platform would have much life because it is very difficult to manage in a shared way," she explained. Hernández was accompanied by a broad representation of this fundamental group for the development of this festival.

Grin will step on the accelerator and will not stop offering shows until Sunday, November 28. For all shows it will be necessary to purchase tickets in advance. The festival of smiles has recovered a large part of its programming, not yet being one hundred percent after the health crisis. However, for some companies that will be in Mueca it will be one of their first performances after a year and a half without performing. It is the case of the Belgians Theater Tol: they will be in Mueca with the show 'Garden of Angels', a “total experience” in which lightness and joy are the most important.

Joy is precisely one of the fundamental aspects in Mueca. The festival will spread laughter in ten different scenic spaces: Peñón, Aqualia Muelle, CC Martiánez are the three main ones, as well as Plaza Víctor Pérez, Plaza Concejil, the former convent of Santo Domingo, Espacio Penitente, Tomás de Iriarte school, Calle Agustín de Betancourt with Quintana street and Joaquina Viera y Clavijo garden. In this way, the festival grows in 2021 with respect to the 2020 edition in terms of scenic spaces and programming.

The public of the Porto festival will be able to enjoy 24 shows, more than 60 performances made up of more than 80 invited artists. In order not to miss any details based on the cultural preferences of the public, the festival has established a series of routes: Pulpo (for fans of juggling and acrobatics), Pejeverde (in search of the different), Camarón (for a family audience), Morena (with dance as the protagonist), Vieja (for the most classic in terms of programming) and Cherne (to enjoy humor at night).

On the other hand, the human deployment made for the proper development of Grin It is also remarkable: around 70 people will be working in different production, communication (photographers, journalists and cameras), information, or technical (sound and lighting) tasks.
